History of Kenmare. Sir William Petty established a settlement/plantation scheme here ("Kilmare") around 1670 comprised of English, Cornish, and Welsh protestants. It wasn't however until around 1775 when the 1st Marquess of Lansdowne (William Petty-Fitzmaurice) took an interest in the settlement that the town took on its present shape. Kenmare is the first heritage town to be chosen in Co Kerry and an informative heritage centre is located in the town square inside the tourist office. Kenmare is the ideal touring centre, adjoining the Ring of Kerry and close to the ring of Beara, is 40 minutes' drive from Killarney, 30 minutes from Glengarriff, 1½ hours from Cork airport.
