The Porta Romana, once known as the Porta San Pier Gattolino was the southernmost gate in the 13th-century walls of the Oltrarno section of Florence, region of Tuscany, Italy. It stands at the confluence of a number of roads: accessed from north by Via Romana, Via de' Serragli, and Viale Francesco Petrarca. History. Porta Romana. The Porta Romana was built in 1326. The gate was part of the last part of the city wall. The name is explained by the fact that it is at this gate that the road to Rome started. In the course of time, the gate often had to be rebuilt and adapted. Like the other city gates it had to be lowered to be less vulnerable to gunfire. Porta Romana is at the end of two boulevards: Viale del Poggio Imperiale and Viale Machiavelli.
