He was a leader of the young Italians who, inspired by the political revolutions of 1848, wanted to change the character of Italian painting. They hoped to lead it in a new direction, away from out-worn neoclassic formulas. The Italian landscapist Serafino De Tivoli was a frequent visitor to the studios of Constant Troyon and Rosa Bonheur in Paris. On his return to Florence in 1856, he drew his friends' attention to the Barbizon school.
