Jesus' use of the phrase "the Son of Man" ( ho huios tou anthrōpou) in reference to himself has long been a conundrum for critical scholarship and is often described as the "Son of Man problem" or the "Son of Man debate.". The common understanding is that "Son of God" implies his deity—which it does—and that "Son of Man" implies his humanity, which it does too. He was a son of man, that is, a human being.
