It's not the outrageous alloy-bodied GT that many expect when the Alfa and Zagato names are thrown together, but the Junior Zagato is a crisply styled, hard-charging little runabout--a baby GT with a shape that has arguably been copied ad infinitum, from the Saab Sonett III to the Matra-Simca Bagheera to, many claim, the original Honda CRX. There are as many theories as to why the Alfa Junior Z proved a slow seller: the then-controversial styling, the lack of a factory-backed racing effort to promote it, little to no advertising, you name it. The Junior Z never made it to the States either, officially, though a handful of private imports have made their way stateside.

They were the successors to the Giulietta Sprint coupé. Bodywork [ edit] The basic body shape shared by all models was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro for Bertone. In 1969, Alfa Romeo introduced the Junior Z. Based on the GT 1300 Junior, the Junior Z sported a sleek Zagato designed body powered by a 1.3L inline four. This model was produced until 1972 when Alfa introduced the 1600 Junior Z, which sported the same design, but was now fitted with a 1.6L inline four, and slightly longer body. The coachbuilt Junior Zagato models are perhaps the most interesting, despite their polarizing wedge design; for around the same price as a decent GTV 1750 or 2000, you can acquire a limited production, Zagato-bodied Alfa Romeo. These lightweight Zagato versions can really fly in the right hands and are perhaps one of the great "sleepers.

More subtle is the exhaust pointing downwards on the 1600, and the fuel fill mounted on the left-hand side of the car. A little "fun fact" is that all Alfa Romeos from the period are fueled on the left side, except the Montreal and the Junior Zagato 1300. This created a common misbelief even between Alfisti that the Junior Zagato 1300. While the internal components were untouched Alfa Romeo mechanicals, the styling of the body was very distinctively Zagato and when it was first introduced at the Turin Automobile Show in 1969, its strikingly futuristic design was met with mixed review from the press. Rewind to the early '70s and Alfa Romeo produced just 402 Zagato Coachbuilt examples of the 1600 Junior Z between 1972 and 1975. Some sources claim that Zagato built all 402 units of the Junior 1600 GTZ within the 1973 calendar year, but that it took Alfa Romeo until mid-1975 to sell them on. Whatever the case may be, the Giulia was getting on a bit by then, though the PF Spider that donated its platform for the Junior GTZ did carry on for a very long time afterwards.
