The rocks were first mentioned as Pastey in 1592 by Matthias Oeder during the first state survey by the Electorate of Saxony. The term Bastei refers to the jagged groups of sandstone rocks located in Saxon Switzerland National Park. Hundreds of years ago, the Neurathen Castle stood on these rocks. Now, not much of that castle remains. It's the bridge, Bastei Brucke (Bastion Bridge), that is the main attraction here.

I won't mention that the name in Germany is Elbsandsteingebirge Bastei… Anyway, I really loved hiking in Bastei. I genuinely think it's one my favorite places in Germany. The Bastei Bridge in Saxon Switzerland, only a short day trip from Dresden, is one of them: A daredevil bridge spans over a group of 190-meter tall rock needles, while the mighty river Elbe forms a generous bend the background.
