The Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW) was developed from 19 frameworks of behaviour change identified in a systematic literature review. It consists of three layers. The hub identifies the sources of the behaviour that could prove fruitful targets for intervention. It uses the COM-B ('capability', 'opportunity', 'motivation' and 'behaviour') model. This forms the hub of a 'behaviour change wheel' (BCW) around which are positioned the nine intervention functions aimed at addressing deficits in one or more of these conditions; around this are placed seven categories of policy that could enable those interventions to occur.

Welcome to the Wheel It is often said that behaviour change is easy. It isn't. But help is at hand. This excellent book provides a step by step guide on how to do it. Professor Mike Kelly, Director of the Centre of Public Health, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) This forms the hub of a 'behaviour change wheel' (BCW) around which are positioned the nine intervention functions aimed at addressing deficits in one or more of these conditions; around this are placed seven categories of policy that could enable those interventions to occur. The behaviour change wheel: A new method for characterising and designing behaviour change interventions Susan Michie1*, Maartje M van Stralen2 and Robert West3 Abstract Background: Improving the design and implementation of evidence-based practice depends on successful behaviour change interventions. The behavior change wheel is a behavior change toolkit. It includes a behavioral model which says that behaviors are a function of capability, opportunity and motivation. The toolkit also details interventions and tools which can help change behaviors. Summary by The World of Work Project The Behavior Change Wheel

The Behaviour Change Wheel: a new method for characterising and designing behaviour change interventions Authors: Susan Michie University College London Maartje Marieke van Stralen Amsterdam. Details Based on the Behaviour Change Wheel framework, these guides can be used to help: develop behaviour change interventions from scratch build on or modify existing interventions choose. Book Details. This is a practical guide to designing and evaluating behaviour change interventions and policies. It is based on the Behaviour Change Wheel, a synthesis of 19 behaviour change frameworks that draw on a wide range of disciplines and approaches. The guide is for policy makers, practitioners, intervention designers and researchers. The Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW) is an integrative framework developed at UCL for designing, evaluating and describing effective behaviour change interventions.

In phase 1 (evidence synthesis), we propose that the capabilities (C), opportunities (O) and motivations (M) model of behaviour change (COM-B) can be used to support the synthesis of a varied corpus of empirical evidence and to identify domains to be included in a proposed behaviour change intervention. Change Wheel (BCW) that was developed by integrating 19 behavioural science frameworks from many disciplines and sectors. There is an equivalent guide focusing on local government policies and behaviour change: Achieving behaviour change: A guide for local government and partners. 'Behaviour change interventions' can be defined as coordinated sets of activities designed to change specified behaviour patterns. In general, these behaviour patterns are measured in terms of the prevalence or incidence of particular behaviours in specified populations ( e.g ., delivery of smoking cessation advice by general practitioners). Interventions and policies to change behaviour can be usefully characterised by means of a BCW comprising: a 'behaviour system' at the hub, encircled by intervention functions and then by policy categories, and a new framework aimed at overcoming their limitations is developed. BackgroundImproving the design and implementation of evidence-based practice depends on successful behaviour change.

Behavioral change is about altering habits and behaviors for the long term. The majority of research around health-related behaviors (Davis, Campbell, Hildon, Hobbs, & Michie, 2015) indicates that small changes can lead to enormous improvements in people's health and life expectancy.
