Sinterklaas [ˌsɪntərˈklaːs] Sint-Nicolaas [sɪnt ˈnikoːlaːs]) is a legendary figure based on Saint Nicholas, patron saint of children. Other Dutch names for the figure include ("The Saint"), De Goede Sint ("The Good Saint") and De Goedheiligman ("The Good Holy Man"). De roe wordt vaak als strafwerktuig gezien, waarbij er soms mee achterna gezeten of geslagen werd, maar vaker nog werd een roe in een schoen gestoken ten teken van straf of als teken dat men te oud was om cadeautjes te krijgen. In dit laatste geval werd iemand soms ook afgezouten waarbij een zakje zou in de schoen werd achter gelaten.

Every year on the 5th of November, Sinterklaas comes to the Netherlands from Spain with a large steam boat, his trusted horse Amerigo and his Moorish helpers, 'de Zwarte Pieten' or 'Black Petes'. He comes to the Netherlands to celebrate his birthday and on the 6th. When I lived in the Netherlands, I had the opportunity to experience the magic of Sinterklaas firsthand. The holiday season in the Netherlands is unlike any other, and Sinterklaas plays a pivotal role in it. From the moment he arrives by boat to Pakjesavond, the evening of gift-giving, the Dutch have a unique way of making this tradition come alive, and I'm excited to share it with you.
