The Enola Gay was the American plane that dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima in World War II. It was named after Enola Gay Tibbets, the mother of the plane's pilot, Paul Tibbets. So why did the electronic music group OMD write a song about it? OMD were, by contrast, hugely ambivalent about Enola Gay. Yes it was catchy, that heavenly synth line spiralling toward the troposphere. But it was also a lament for the destruction of Hiroshima. Most of the melodic parts of Enola Gay were recorded on a Korg Micro-Preset bought from a mail order catalogue. OMD's new album English Electric is out on 8 April. They tour the UK from 28 April.
