Geghard ( Armenian: Գեղարդ, meaning "spear") is a medieval monastery in the Kotayk province of Armenia, being partially carved out of the adjacent mountain, surrounded by cliffs. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site with enhanced protection [1] status. Geghard Monastery was founded in the 4th-century by Gregory the Illuminator inside of a cave and was one of the secret churches in early Armenian history that was destroyed and burned down by Arabs in the 9th-century.
