Guide to Île de Gorée, Senegal

Île de Gorée (also known as Goree Island) is a small island located just off the coast of Dakar, Senegal's sprawling capital city. It has a convoluted colonial history and was once an important stop on Atlantic trade routes from Africa to Europe and the Americas. Senegal's capital is also the gateway to the Île de Gorée, a sleepy tropical island just 3km from the high-rises of downtown. With its sandy, car-free lanes and bougainvillea-draped colonial buildings, 28-hectare Gorée provides a dramatic contrast to Dakar's bustling urbanism, and makes for an ideal day trip. Île de Gorée is frequently visited and easy to get to from Dakar. A ferry runs every one or two hours from the gare maritime (passenger port) in Dakar to Gorée and is about a 25 minute boat ride. The first ferry leaves Dakar at 7am and the last ferry leaves Gorée returning back to Dakar at midnight (after 1am on Saturdays).
