Jenny von Westphalen Johanna Bertha Julie Jenny Edle von Westphalen (12 February 1814 - 2 December 1881) was a German theatre critic and political activist. Born Johanna Bertha Julie Jenny von Westphalen on February 12, 1814, in the small north German town of Salzwedel; died in London on December 2, 1881; daughter of Johann Ludwig von Westphalen (a Prussian civil servant) and Caroline Heubel von Westphalen; education uncertain, but perhaps attended a private Catholic school in Trier; married Karl Ma. Jenny von Westphalen was older than Karl Marx by four years. They were already well-acquainted with each other since they were children but became more intimate during their teenage years. Like Marx, Jenny was educated and highly literate, and both were eventually drawn to each other. Born in 1814 to Prussian aristocracy, Jenny von Westphalen was well known in Trier's social circles. She was expected to fulfil class expectations by grooming herself for marriage to a Prussian officer or a man of high birth. Marx married his childhood sweetheart, Jenny von Westphalen, and stayed married for life. He also took a close and traditional interest in the marriages of his daughters, Jenny and Laura, both to French men (and Eleanor fell in love with Henri Lissagaray, but did not marry).
