The 747 was an exceptional aircraft for its day and its 353-passenger capacity, in the KLM constellation, was a huge leap forward compared with the largest aircraft KLM had in operation at that time. This had all sorts of consequences for handling, crew, maintenance and catering. KLM's Boeing 747 will be retiring after 50 years of loyal service. Fans of this magnificent machine have been awaiting the phase out with a heavy heart for some time. I am also dreading the departure of the Grand Old Lady, which got me wondering why people develop such warm feelings for an aircraft. Despite both aircraft attempting to avoid each other, with the Pan Am plane veering sharply onto the grass and the KLM Boeing 747 pulling up, they were unable to avoid the collision.. As explained in extensive piece published by The Sun, the KLM aircraft's undercarriage and engines hit the top of the Pan Am plane at speed, resulting in a catastrophic crash. The wingspan is comparable to a 20-lane highway, the four CF6-80C2 engines are good for power close to that of 100 F1 racing cars and, most of all, the impressive nose, where the upper deck is around six storeys above the ground. 4. She's highly photogenic. The 747 is probably also the most photographed plane.
