South Los Angeles, also known as South Central Los Angeles or simply South Central, is a region in southwestern Los Angeles County, California, lying mostly within the city limits of Los Angeles, south of downtown . It is "defined on Los Angeles city maps as a 16-square-mile rectangle with two prongs at the south end." South Central is a large region of Los Angeles made up of the neighborhoods south of Downtown L.A. This is a relatively impoverished area of the city, infamous for gang violence and for being the epicenter of major race riots in the 1960s and 1990s. There is no denying that crime is on the rise in LA and other major metros but a lot of the hype around South Central LA being too dangerous to visit isn't totally warranted. You are most definitely safe to drive and go out to restaurants, but of course use common sense - be aware of your surroundings, don't. South LA vs. South Central: What's in a name?
