New Slains Castle is situated in the picturesque village of Cruden Bay, approximately half an hour's drive north of Aberdeen (via the A92/A90). A small car park is available outside the castle. Alternatively, turn onto Main Street opposite the Kilmarnock Arms Hotel in the village, and park next to the church. The huge ruin of Slains (or New Slains) Castle, standing on precipitous cliffs above the sea, incorporates part of the basement of the 16th-century tower house of Bowness. The castle now consists of mostly two-storey buildings around a central courtyard, with adjoining ranges, and a tall four-storey tower with a round stair-turret. New Slains Castle's second literary connection comes at the end of the 19th century, when it is believed to have become the inspiration for Castle Dracula in Bram Stoker's novel Dracula. Stoker was a frequent visitor to Cruden Bay following his first visit in 1893, including a visit to New Slains itself in 1904, and eventually retired to nearby. New Slains Castle, now just wall segments with large picture windows, stone stairways to nowhere, and unreachable, crumbling turrets, was once the painstakingly grand reconstruction of a 13th.
