Nikko slender deutzia is a dwarf cultivar with a spreading habit. It produces abundant small white flowers in spring. Unlike many deutzia, Nikko offers burgundy fall foliage color. The genus Deutzia consists of medium sized flowering shrubs native to Asia, generally with slender stems and a fine-textured arching habit. USNA taxonomist Frederick G. Meyer and Roy Davidson, Bellevue, WA later determined this plant to be a variant of D. gracilis, the slender deutzia. The cultivar name 'Nikko' appears to have been coined by British nurseryman C.G. Hollett of Greenbank Nursery, Cumbria, England in 1976-77. Introduced in the late 1980's.
Slender Deutzia 'Nikko' (Deutzia gracilis) are mound forming deciduous shrubs with dense foliage. The long stems grow upright at the base but arch with length and eventually touch the ground. Small and fragrant bell shaped white flowers grow in clusters in spring. The flowers are so numerous that they engulf the entire shrub for a few weeks. This lower, dwarf cultivar of the Slender Deutzia is fairly commonly sold in many nurseries in southeast Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic. Many of its stems grow along the ground and root, and it is like a groundcover. It does make a good delicate white flower display and it gets a good purple fall color.
