Perhaps one of my favourite locations, this beautiful corner of Shetland, is sometimes forgotten as people race north. Gletness in Nesting was most recently used in series seven as the site of the Noss View Guest House. This area of outstanding beauty inspired the traditional tune, Isles o' Gletness; a lovely waltz played on the accordion. North of the Bressay ferry terminal is Gardie House, dating back to 1724 and one of Shetland's finest lairds' houses, which is still inhabited today. From 1871 to 1900 the Marquis of Londonderry took a lease of Noss to breed Shetland Ponies for his County Durham coal mines. A display in the old Pony Pund tells the story of this rather cruel.

Noss is a small island, off the island of Bressay, off the Shetland mainland.To get there, you'll need to take a ferry to Bressay, and follw signs for Noss (about a three mile drive). From the car park, you walk down the track to the small jetty. You're spotted by the warden who comes to collect you in a small inflatable boat. The island is open from 10am to 5pm (except Mondays and Thursdays) from late May to the end of August. A red flag is flown on the island if it is closed. Visitors should wait at the sign on the shore at Noss Sound for collection by the boat. A walk around the perimeter of Noss will take at least three hours.
