Paul van Kempen (16 May 1893 - 8 December 1955) was a Dutch conductor . Personal life Van Kempen was born in Zoeterwoude, Netherlands. He studied at the Amsterdam conservatory from 1910 to 1913, including composition and conducting with Julius Roentgen and Bernard Zweers, as well as violin with Louis Zimmerman. Relocating to Germany in search of opportunities to conduct, van Kempen became a German citizen in 1932, always hoping to return home to lead a Dutch orchestra. He finally took charge of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic in 1949. Following the very popular release of Paul van Kempen's Tchaikovsky recordings with the Concertgebouw Orchestra on Philips (Decca Eloquence 480 8536), we now present the three Beethoven symphonies (Nos. 3, 7 and 8, recorded in 1951 and 1953) he made for Philips, coupled with his 1952 Deutsche Grammophon recording of 'The Consecration of the. Mr A. Adama Zijlstra, the organiser of the Scheveningen Concerts, was fiercely anti-Van Kempen. In his very informative book "Vaar wel Scheveningen" (Sijthoff, 1974), in which many pre-war celebrities pass in review, he writes: "There was one conductor whom I tried energetically to keep away from, namely Mr. Paul van Kempen.This Dutchman, who had made a career for himself in Germany, was one.
