The PT-91 Twardy is a Polish main battle tank. A development of the T-72M1, it entered service in 1995. The PT-91 was designed at the OBRUM and is produced by the Bumar Łabędy company, part of the Bumar Group, a Polish technical military consortium. The PT-91 Twardy (Hard) is a Polish attempt to field an equivalent of the T-80 at a lower cost. Poland acquired small numbers of T-80 tanks in the late 1980s and began negotiating license.
PT-91 Twardy: The PT-91 Twardy is powered by a 12-cylinder diesel engine, producing 850 hp, and has a top speed of 60 km/h (37 mph) on the road and 45 km/h (28 mph) off-road. It has a range of 650 km (400 miles) on a single fuel tank. The tank has a torsion bar suspension system, providing good off-road mobility and manoeuvrability. The PT-91 is a better tank than a T-72M1 from the 1980s and much better than a much older T-62 or T-55. In terms of firepower and protection, the Polish-made tank could be just behind a German-made Leopard 2A4. Poland acquired some 230 PT-91s in the 1990s. Warsaw has so far ceded 60 of them to Kyiv.
