[1] History[edit] Medieval history[edit] 1400s During the Scottish Wars of Independence, the occupation of the castle changed hands twice, between the Scots and those loyal to the English. In 1308 the castle was retaken by Robert I (the Bruce) and destroyed to prevent any further military use. The Earl of Mar started rebuilding the castle in 1412, with stone for the first time. The existing castle buildings and esplanade gardens are being transformed from their original use as the home of Inverness' prison and courts into a celebration of what makes the Highlands of Scotland a special place to live, work and visit.
