In this tutorial i am trying to give you some basic tips for drawing skin. The lightest colors you use will be your highlights, the colors you use for the darkest areas will be your shadows and the colors you apply in between these two will be your midtones. You can also include some accent colors if you are going with the advanced selection. They are 1) cinnamon (faber-castell polychromos) for the highlights, 2) burnt carmine (Lyra Rembrandt polycolor) for the mid-tones and 3) van-dyke brown (Lyra Rembrandt polycolor) for the shadows. As mentioned before, you don't need to use the exact same colors, and of course brands don't matter. (Here I created a piece with kids colored pencils)

Color Palette Part 1: Analyse Colours First we will analyse the skin colour of the person in the portrait. You are probably familiar with the typical "skin colour" that can be found in all well-stocked coloured pencil sets. Have you ever tried to draw skin with it? If you had to name skin color, what would it be? I'd say orange or red. So I'll go for a reddish-orange. But a plain reddish-orange looks far too saturated to be a skin colour.
