Ṭāriq ibn Ziyād ( Arabic: طارق بن زياد ), also known simply as Tarik in English, was an Umayyad commander who initiated the Muslim conquest of Visigothic Hispania (present-day Spain and Portugal) in 711-718 AD. Ṭāriq ibn Ziyād, (died c. 720), Berber general who led the Muslim conquest of Spain. Mūsā ibn Nuṣayr, the Arab conqueror of Morocco, left his general Ṭāriq to govern Tangier in his place. Spain at this time was under Visigothic rule but was rent by civil war.

There are three varying accounts of his origins: He was a Persian from Hamadan; he belonged to the Sadif clan; he was a Berber from Algeria.
