Three tiny islands in the Sulu Sea off the east coast of Borneo make up Turtle Island National Park. The Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak are situated in North Borneo (off the north east coast of Sabah), 40km north from Sabah's second city, Sandakan, where you'll find Turtle Island or in Malaysian, Pulau Selingan. Selingan Island or also fondly known as Selingan Turtle Island, is a safe haven for the green and hawksbill turtles. Both turtle species are currently endangered but the island serves as place for them to safely lay their eggs. Selingan Turtle Island in the Turtle Islands National Park is home to a turtle conservation project. Each day, 40 lucky visitors can spend the night and watch the turtles lay eggs as well as the release of newly hatched baby turtles. Turtle Islands Park Sandakan Selingan, the largest of the islands, houses the park's headquarters, a turtle hatchery, tourist accommodation and basic facilities. The other two islands are more for conservation activities. During daytime, visitors are free to do beach activities, walk around, sunbathing and snorkeling.
