Unawatuna is one of the biggest tourist destinations in Sri Lanka and is the most "famous" beach in the country. It is a lovely banana-shaped beach of golden sand and turquoise water, surrounded by green palm trees! It was the first beach we visited in Sri Lanka. Unawatuna is located in the southern part of Sri Lanka, around 145km from Colombo and only 5km to the southeast of Galle. It takes approximately 2 hours to get to Unawatuna from Colombo on a taxi. You can also take a train from Colombo to Unawatuna that takes around 3 hours 30 minutes.
