A roepnaam is a call name. Roepnamen were often derivatives of the official name. For example, these were the call names of my grandparents: Hendrik Hoitink, known as Henk Gesiena Wilhelmina Woordes, known as Mien, a diminutive of Wilhelmina. Johannes Marijnissen, known as Jan. Roepnamen are usually derived from a person's first name. And so, a Willem can become a Wil, Wim, Wiel, Willy, and so on. Dude, my name (roepnaam) is Mark, but my legal names are Hermanus Klaas. My parents just took those names, jumbled the letters and distilled Mark out of that for my everyday name. Calling Names (Roepnaam) It is common for people to have both a given name and a 'calling name' ( roepnaam ). The latter refers to a name given to the newly-born child by their parents. For example, Elisabeth is the official given name that will appear on official documents and Esther is the 'calling name'. These roepnamen are used throughout daily life and most Dutch people (with roepnamen) rarely employ their birth names outside of formal settings. In fact, it is pretty common for officialforms in the Netherlands to feature boxes for first names and roepnamen, in case applicants prefer being called by their informal titles.
