According to the theory, the word "how" represents how organizations can achieve their purpose of existence. However, the last word, "What," in theory, is least focused upon by successful organizations. Instead, this factor focuses on the product or service the organization delivers to its consumer. The WHY is often referred to as your purpose, your mission, your mission statement or your raison d'être - the very reason for your existence. Since "Why are we here?" is a fundamental question.

The Why-What-How framework is so simple that it sounds like a reading/writing lesson for first graders. Nonetheless, it guides most, if not all, of my work documents. My writing on this site also follows it (the other format being lists like this and this ). Why: Start by explaining Why the document is important. The Golden Circle model is a model that can be used in a variety of ways. It can be used by organizations, by people every day and by leaders among others. The leader can be the CEO of a company or it can be a project manager among others. The model is designed by Simon Sinek and it consists of 3 parts: WHY, HOW and WHAT. In a business context, the "Why" defines the Purpose or the higher meaning of an organization. In my understanding, this purpose always refers to the customer. If you find that the question of the "Why" does not find a convincing answer for you, then replace the "Why" with a "For". 'Start With Why' is how you explain your purpose and the reason you exist and behave as you do. Sinek's theory is that successfully communicating the passion behind the 'Why' is a way to communicate with the listener's limbic brain.

They buy how you do it" I watched an interesting talk by Simon Sinek on what makes certain companies or people achieve greatness. The why-how-what model is actually grounded in biology. Our brain is split into the neo-cortex and the limbic brain. The neo-cortex (how and what) is responsible for all our rational, analytical thought and language. Our limbic brain (why) is responsible for feelings, trust and all human behaviour and decision making with no capacity for language. Though not intended to be a documentary about leadership, Vikram Gandhi's exploration as to why we look for gurus to follow is a perfect metaphor for true leadership. Namely, when those we choose to follow encourage us to find our own strength. They understand that they can't observe and control everything in their organizations (much as many of them would like to). They earnestly want to develop good strategies and they get the theory.
