Anne Lister wrote over five million words over her lifetime (1791-1840) in the form of personal journals (an estimated sixth of which was in coded language to keep secret the details of her intimate life and reflections), gifting us with insight about a rich and adventurous life. In their entirety, the journals of Anne Lister run to four million words contained in 26 volumes, that is, 2 thin blue exercise books and 24 small hard-backed books. From their first beginnings in 1806, the complex construction of Anne's journals evolved over a number of years and comprises an obsessive recording of every aspect of her life. Lister was from a minor landowning family at Shibden in Calderdale, West Riding of Yorkshire, and had multiple lesbian love affairs from her schooldays onwards, often on long trips abroad. Anne Lister (1791-1840) has become internationally known as a diarist extraordinaire due to the explicit contents of her voluminous diaries which, apart from a period of six missing years (1810-1816), extend from her first entries as a 15-year-old schoolgirl 1806 until 1840, the year of her death.

But Anne Lister had no truck with the misogynistic conventions of 19th Century England. She was a businesswoman, entered politics and climbed mountains.. Anne's journals detailed a lesbian.
