When the AR XA turntable came out in 1961, it was an instant classic - almost immune to external shocks and vibrations, low in rumble, and priced at a shockingly affordable $58.00 ($489 today), less cartridge but complete with arm, dustcover, and even a stylus force gauge. (The price was soon raised to a more sustainable $78, or $658 today.) AR XA Model This is the original AR turntable. (See AR History for more specific background on its development.) It had a two-piece aluminum platter which was driven by a small synchronous motor. Early versions had two motors to add the extra torque needed to start the heavy platter. A spring-suspended subchassis supported the platter and tonearm.

#1 I have a chance to pick one up for $100 and was wondering if anyone knows anything about this turntable. BrocLuno Lunatic Member May 18, 2009 #2 Very good AFTER they have been massaged and reworked. If they are stock and worn - not so great. A little history: My first serious turntable, acquired in 1969, was an Acoustic Research XA, a belt-driven integrated designed by the great Edgar Villchur. Its only switch was on/off, its features Spartan to say the least—going from 33.3 to 45rpm required repositioning the belt on the pulley (there was no pitch adjustment)—but its classic. Comes with the serial # matched box, manuals, and all the goodies.. Super clean including the dust cover. Table is 100% functional. Very stable and quiet. Please check the linked Youtube video. I replaced a new belt and arm wires this year. Ready to play! This turntable is true manual you can get. It sounds extraordinary when you dial in right.

It contains a motor, a rubber belt, a highly machined platter/spindle, an ultra lightweight tone arm, a cartridge with stylus, and an on/off switch. The platter is suspended at three places underneath. Wow and flutter are indiscernible. You can spin the platter by hand and then go make a cup of coffee while it's still spinning.. The AR XA is also one of the most modified turntables ever. There were a number of companies that produced upgrades to the table. The most popular were probably the "Merrill Mods". Some of the mods included: Enhanced speed controllers Enhanced motors Acrylic-lead turntable mats Acrylic subchassis Center and outer clamps Improved parts
