The Bf 109 fighter bomber, better known as a Jabo, was first used in the Battle of Britain to hit various sensitive points in the British air defense. Later, the Jabos targets Channel shipping. Eventually, the Jabos would be shifted to the Eastern Front, but not without one last hurrah during the Battle of the Bulge. Messerschmitt proposed the idea as a means of providing the Luftwaffe with a long-range Jabo that would leverage off existing Bf 109 production tooling. Edward Lucien Toppins (June 12, 1915 - December 10, 1946) was a U.S. Army Air Force officer, commanding officer of the 602nd Air Engineering Squadron, and a celebrated African-American World War II fighter pilot within the 332nd Fighter Group's 99th Fighter Squadron, best known as the Tuskegee Airmen, "Red Tails," or "Schwartze Vogelmenschen" ("Black Birdmen") among enemy German pilots. Nevertheless, by the second half of 1940 the Bf 109's operability was widened due to operational needs and it was flown as a fighter-bomber for precision attacks in Southern England. At first ad hoc conversions were made 'in the field' to allow the aircraft to carry a bomb or extra fuel tank.
