Cilan and Pansage are in Johto together after parting ways with Ash and Iris, but find themselves lost in the woods. They make it out safely and discover a beautiful lake, where Cilan sees a Qwilfish and tries to catch it by fishing. However, the line accidentally hooks a Gyarados that Cilan decides to capture as well. This Pansage is a Grass-type Pokémon owned by Cilan. Pansage appears as a cheerful and joyous Pokémon and is extremely loyal to Cilan such as mimicking his actions and helping him to cook exquisite food for Ash and Iris. Pansage is also very close to Chili and Cress' Pokémon, Panpour and Pansear respectively, much like Cilan's relationship with his twin brothers. Also, Pansage is an expert. The fight becomes so intense that Pikachu, Axew, and Pansage have to intervene. With lunch over, everybody decides to go find the special Onix. Ash and his friends enter a cave, searching for some sign of an Onix. Iris and Cilan both show apprehension when Ash and Dawn explain how large they are, and one suddenly begins barreling through the cave. His Japanese name, Dento, may come from 田 ( Cilan is a connoisseur in a lot of things — which amazes a lot of people, except for Iris, who gets annoyed sometimes. Also, Cilan is a skillful cook, fisher, and knows a lot about Pokémon battles while being a good battler as well, especially being a Gym Leader.

Personality Like Cilan, Pansage is kind and cheerful. He showed himself to be very forgiving, as he held no grudge against Dwebble, despite being injured by it and eventually made ill. However, Pansage can sometimes be quick tempered, such as when he was suddenly attacked while taking a nap by Bianca's Minccino, then quickly knocked him out . Cilan is up first, in an exciting Connoisseur-versus-Coordinator match, and gives a glowing (if long-winded) evaluation of Dawn's bond with Piplup in the middle of the battle.
