Colt Model 1861 Navy Revolver Carried by soldiers on both sides, the streamlined Colt Navy was a popular sidearm. This pistol is essentially a .36 caliber version of Colt's Model 1860 Army Revolver. Nearly 40,000 were produced between 1861 and 1873, but only a few hundred were purchased by the Federal government for both Army and Navy use. The 1861 Navy is often acclaimed as Colt's most handsome pistol. Uberti's 1861 Navy Civil Brass met a civilian demand for a medium-frame, light revolver. Features & Highlights Percussion Cap Seating The frame cutout in the rear of the cylinder allows easy access to the nipples for seating percussion caps. Black Powder Load Seating The Colt Model 1861 Navy saw usage on the battlefields of the American Civil War and, like the Colt Model 1851 Navy before it, also saw actions in the violent American expansion into the West. This includes a cased pair of heavily engraved, gold- and silver-plated, elephant-ivory-gripped, .36-caliber Colt Model 1861 Navy revolvers believed to be owned by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer. Colt 1861 Navy revolver in original centrefire metallic cartridge configuration, cal. .38 in., using parts from a pre-cartridge model hence the original .36 in. stamping on triggerguard, rifled round barrel 190 mm (7 1/2 inch) with Mason-style side ejector. The Colt Model 1861 Navy revolver was a favorite firearm used during and after the Civil War. Between 1861 and 1873, a total of 38,843 were manufactured. The first Model 1861 is on display at the Cody Firearms Museum. This firearm bears both the serial number "1" and the manufacture date April 9, 1861. It is also one of one. The Model 1861 Navy was the pinnacle of Colt's percussion revolver production and blended some of the best features of both the popular Old Model Navy (aka Model 1851) and New Model Army (aka Model 1860) revolvers into one pistol.
