A piece 12" long and 1" by 2" in cross section set vertically can support a weight of twenty tons! Leaves make food for the tree, and this tells us much about their shapes. For example, the narrow needles of a Douglas fir can expose as much as three acres of chlorophyll surface to the sun. Set vertically, a 1″ x 2″ cross-section that is 12″ long can support twenty tons! Roots Contrary to popular belief, tree roots are typically found in the top three feet of the soil. As well, they expand well beyond the dripline, often occupying an area two to four times the size of the tree crown. Cross Section of a Tree Trunk (Infographic) January 4, 2019 by mediabooth Tree Stumps Bark The outside layer of the trunk. The bark serves as a protective layer for the more delicate inside wood of the tree. Cambium The thin layer of living cells just inside the bark. This part of the tree makes new cells allowing the tree to grow wider. Sapwood The woody stems and trunk are just the beginning: Trunk: The most recognizable part of the tree and its support structure. Tree Rings and Climate Trees contain some of nature's most accurate evidence of the past. Their growth layers, appearing as rings in the cross section of the tree trunk, record evidence of disastrous floods, insect attacks, lightning strikes, and even earthquakes that occurred during the lifespan of the tree.
Cross section diagram of a tree trunk. The amount of photosynthesis that can occur in the leaves is directly related to the amount of water that the roots can absorb. A small root system can only support the photosynthesis of a small canopy, and roots can only grow larger if they have enough energy (sugar) provided by the leaves.. What are tree rings?
