Cushman Scooter with Harley Davidson Sportster Power

Founded in 1901 as a manufacturer of small internal-combustion engines for farm equipment and boats, the Cushman Motor Works added motor scooters to its product line in 1936. Filling a gap between bicycles and motorcycles, the Cushman scooter was popular among high school students, adults (as an economical "second car") and small businesses. Scooters were introduced in 1936 to help sell more Husky engines. Their Scooters helped out in World War 2 as they were dropped over enemy lines via parachute with the troops giving instant mobility to our servicemen. After the war, they were used both on the road and in factories where the step-through version made it easy to get around. The newly named Cushman Eagle Motorcycle became the firm's best seller ever. While Cushman scooters were fine products in the 1950's, they could not endure competition from Japanese motorcycle manufacturers who brought price and sophistication along with better distribution and marketing. Cushman made nearly 5,000 airborne scooters for the military beginning in 1944. The rugged, simple Model 53 could travel through a foot of water, climb a 25 percent grade and had a range of about 100 miles. The Cushman scooter and hand cart were donated by Lt. Col. (Ret.) Frederick M. Serfass, Douglasville, Penn., in 2003. TECHNICAL NOTES:
