The species is native to Japan, and this cultivar originated as a sport with golden needles found on C. pisifera 'Filifera,' a cultivar 'Filifera Aurea Nana' - it is not a genuine dwarf, but a slow growing cultivar propagated from the lateral branches of 'Filifera Aurea', and can grow to height of 2 m (Bärtels, p. 240). 'Golden Mop' - it is a mutation of 'Filifera Aurea' and a true dwarf, to 1 m, with more intense yellow.
