Exploring Enrique Metinides' images is to immerse yourself in those depths of humanity awash in raw emotion, as the 79-year-old photographer has captured some of the most poignant moments to unfold on the streets of Mexico City across the span of five decades.. "I wanted to take photos like the movies I saw," Metinides says, explaining. It's cruel to say, but in Mr. Metinides's world his suffering becomes our reward. From 1948 until his forced retirement in 1979, the Mexican photographer Enrique Metinides took thousands of images and followed hundreds of stories in and around Mexico City. And what images and stories they were: car wrecks and train derailments, a bi-plane crashed on to a roof, street stabbings and shootings in the park, apartments and petrol stations set alight, earthquakes, accidental. At 87 years old, Enrique Metinides has exhibited his work in Casa de América, Madrid, Spain; La Central de Arte Guadalajara, Guadalajara, Mexico; The Photographers' Gallery in London, United Kingdom; the Anton Kern Gallery in New York; the Foto Museo Cuatro Caminos and the Museo del Estanquillo in Mexico City, among many other spaces.
