About HDL What is strategic design? Why Strategic Design? HDL Global HDL Global From 1968's merger of design and industry, 2010's peek into design and the public sector, and 2013's celebration of strategic design, HDL Global offers a platform for collaborative efforts at the intersection of design and government. — HDL Global 2013 Helsinki Design Lab seeks to expand the practice of design beyond of the realm of cultural affairs. Although many of us have backgrounds in architecture or other fields of traditional design, HDL's work is focused on honing the skill set and mindset of the designer to help solve the challenges faced by the interdependent world. As an initiative of the Finnish Innovation Fund, also known as Sitra, Helsinki Design Lab (HDL) was one of the first design teams in the world located within national government, and the first to focus exclusively on strategic design. Helsinki Design Lab helps government see the 'architecture of problems.' Our mission is to advance this way of working. We call it strategic design. Helsinki Design Lab's roots stretch back to 1968. In 2008 Sitra resurrected the initiative and operated it for five years. We are now closing this chapter of the project's life, and in doing so creating a living archive.
