Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was the most important fin-de-siècle printmaker. This was acknowledged as early as 1898 by the writer André Mellerio, who surveyed the leading contemporary printmakers in his publication La Lithographie originale en couleurs. Mellerio praised Lautrec's unique representation of modern life, his incredibly strong. Toulouse-Lautrec was a good friend of Vincent van Gogh. Van Gogh saw Poudre de riz shortly before he left Paris for Arles. His brother Theo had bought the painting for his private collection. Toulouse-Lautrec constantly invented new methods, using color in large flat areas enclosed sharply and ironically. Vincent Van Gogh (1853-90) and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), eleven years his junior, both contracted syphilis and both died at the age of thirty-seven. Despite their completely different backgrounds, character and way of life, these freakish outsiders formed a strange friendship during the last four years of Vincent's life.
