Donor bikes have become more expensive in recent years, but there is a large aftermarket to help the garage or shed builder in need of parts or expertise. The Honda CBX550 Four, introduced in 1982, boasted some interesting signature elements at the time. Most notably, there was the distinctive 4-into-2 exhaust system, featuring crossover pipes in front of the engine — overall, a lovely set of serpentine chrome.

Honda evolved the CB450 'black bomber' twin into a CB500 twin to compete, but soon replaced it with a 4 cylinder 500 version. It wasn't long before the 500cc mill was taken out to 544cc to create the CB550 Four, but it took until '75 or '76 for Honda to iron out most of the early issues with this model. Blake and I both rode her CB550 cafe racer and agreed it was one of the smoothest riding and sounding vintage bikes we'd ever encountered.
