It isn't often that a Best of Show contender at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is restored in an owner's garage, then hauled cross-country in a borrowed trailer towed by a friend's truck. This car, Lot 151, sold for $891,000, including buyer's premium, at RM Sotheby's auction in Monterey, CA, on August 18, 2017. When I received the assignment to write a profile of this car, I accepted with great enthusiasm. This happens to be one of my favorite cars on the planet.

By 1949, Cisitalia's financial position quickly worsened and Abarth decided to jump the sinking ship. The automotive industry alone should be enough to make you want to travel back in time, and the 1953 Abarth 1100 Sport by Ghia does it for you. Now, nearly seven decades on we're really starting to appreciate that era of automotive design more and more. Looking all futuristic, this vehicle is somewhat reminiscent of those flying car George. Believed to have been designed by Giovanni Michelotti, it was constructed concurrently with the Ghia-bodied Chryslers of the same period. Mainly to promote the latest Fiat, which was previewed at Turin, the car was referred to as the 1100 Sport.
