December 7, 2012 Alex Colville was born in Toronto in 1920, and received a bachelor of fine arts degree from Mount Allison University in 1942. Colville enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces under the War Artist Program and was deployed to Europe for four years. The pictures of Canadian artist Alex Colville bear more affinity to the American Precisionists of the 1930s than to photo-realism. His perfect compositions are based on an abundance of sketches and studies, which are first brought into an abstract, geometric scheme before drawings are made from the live model and proportioned according to the planned format. Allex Colville, one of the great modem realist painters, has the Flemish detail of Andrew Wyeth, the eerie foreboding of George Tooker, and the anguished confrontations of Lucian Freud.
