The site is known for its well-preserved ceremonial ball courts and petroglyph -carved monoliths. The Caguana Ceremonial Ball Courts Site, a National Historic Landmark, is located on Rte. 111, Km. 12.3, west of Utuado, Puerto Rico. The park is open 9:00am to 4:00pm, Wednesday-Sunday. The Caguana Indigenous Ceremonial Site is the Caribbean's most important Taíno archeological site, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the indigenous cultures that inhabited the region before the Spanish colonization. The Caguana site is located in Puerto Rico's mountainous town of Utuado, to the east of the Tanamá River. The ball courts are the largest in the Caribbean. The petroglyphs are carved into the limestone bedrock and are believed to be over 700 years old. The site was abandoned by the Taíno around 1500 AD. The site was rediscovered in the early 20th century. The park was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1993. Caguana Ceremonial Center consists of a large central plaza, a ceremonial dance area, 10 rectangular earth-and-stone-lined ball courts and plazas and one circular plaza, as well as the remains of an oval-shaped structure and a sacred cemi mound.
