The XLamp® XM-L® Gen 2 LEDs are multi-color RGBW LEDs that deliver the combination of high lumen output and great color mixing in a small 5.0 x 5.0 mm package. The XLamp XM-L Color Gen 2 LEDs feature the smallest possible distance between LED die, creating a small optical source for excellent optical control and eficient color mixing. The biggest and most significant difference is in the size of the LEDs. As said at the beginning of the post, the XP-L actually uses the XM-L2 die but in a smaller package. The XP-L technology allowed for the bigger die to be placed in a smaller dome that is actually cut off a bit on the sides to make it fit on an XP sized footprint.

Both were mounted on a 20mm copper Sinkpad, the XP-L on a xp-type and XM-L2 on a xm-type. Cree LED's XLamp XM-L2 LED builds on the unprecedented performance of the original XM-L by increasing lumen output up to 15% while providing a single die LED point source for precise optical control.
