Hermann Ottomar Herzog (15 November 1832 - 6 February 1932) was a prominent nineteenth- and early twentieth-century European and American artist, primarily known for his landscapes. He is associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. He was born in Bremen, Germany and entered the Düsseldorf Academy at age seventeen. Hermann Ottomar Herzog (November 16, 1832 [1] - February 6, 1932) was a prominent nineteenth- and early twentieth-century European and American artist, primarily known for his landscapes. He is associated with the Düsseldorf School and Hudson River School of painting. Hermann Herzog began his studies at the Düsseldorf Academy and later continued his training while traveling extensively throughout Europe. In the late 1860s, after a long trip to Norway, Hermann Ottomar Herzog decided to sail to the United States and settled near Philadelphia. From his new home base, he traveled throughout the U.S. North to South and East to West and even went to Mexico. Painting his way across the western states, he finally arriving in California in 1873.
