Honda CB550 Cafe Racers. The Honda CB550 is perhaps the perfect cafe racer candidate. The bike packs a strong punch from its gutsy middleweight inline four, and the handling is lightning-quick and crisp. Donor bikes have become more expensive in recent years, but there is a large aftermarket to help the garage or shed builder in need of parts. Steven purchased the '73 Honda CB500 K2 from Jim Hannah who ran Victoria Motorcycle Salvage in Victoria British Columbia. Jim was forced to close his 33-year-old business after being evicted from the building. At 62 years old Jim decided to shut shop and sold off his inventory. Steven planned to return when his Honda project was done to show. We envisioned the CB500 to be a classic racer with all of the traditional café racer style elements such as a low and slightly forward stance, distinct straight lines, clip-ons and a classic seat cowl. Upgraded brakes for a better bite and functional tires were also planned as essential ingredients. In order to keep the bike recognizable as a CB500, Lionel kept the original engine and tank, but mated the frame to a set of forks and single-sided swingarm from a Ducati Panigale. He built the 4-into-4 exhaust from 115 separate segments of stainless steel, and the pure white color scheme had been his mind for quite some time.
