The team ran cars in many motorsport categories including Formula One, Formula Two, Formula Ford, Formula Junior, IndyCar, and sports car racing. From 1972 to 1986, Team Lotus was sponsored by tobacco company John Player & Sons, and all of its Formula 1 cars wore a distinctive black-and-gold livery. During that time, the team won. For those who are unfamiliar, John Player Special is—you guessed it—a tobacco company! It sponsored the Lotus F1 team in the 1970s and 1980s, giving the cars an iconic black and gold livery. John Player Team Lotus number one driver for 1972 was Emerson Fittipaldi. He won five GPs in 1972, but at the German GP held at the Nurburgring he was out of luck and retired with gearbox problems.

The JPS livery is certainly well-documented, however, there is an angle that often goes unmentioned, and it's that of the John Player Special livery away from the track. There's an image of Colin Chapman sat on his Lotus Esprit, parked in front of the JPS private plane—and this, for me, was the ultimate in racing chic. Emerson Fittipaldi made those colors famous on Lotus race cars when he won the 1972 World Championship with the "radical" Lotus 72. The oft-times revolutionary cars from the mind of Colin Chapman changed the face and technology of auto racing.
