Thanks all for the comments. Is the chart correct re tri-color 18C nibs? For example, there was one that was advertised and sold here yesterday evening that had a tri-color 18C nib but was described as from the 60s with what seemed to be a feed with grooves on the face only (although there wasn't a photo of the feed, so I can't be sure). It's got a tri-tone 18C nib (which according to the "dating 149's" chart is an earlier nib), but it's also got the split ebonite feed and plastic threaded piston. Hi all, I have run through the PDF on a MontBlanc 149 i picked up on local classifieds and my conclusion seems to be that it is a 1970's circa 149. I have attached images. Are these worth around 400 USD? That is what I paid for the pen, and not sure if I overpaid :) If someone thinks otherwise than 1970's-1980's, I'd love to know. From what I see: This chart would suggest the plastic threaded 149 certainly is pre-90, and the 14k might be.. You'll find hints about other details as well; suggesting for instance that the aforementioned plastic threaded 18C tri-color might be mid-50s to early 70s. (Haven't cross-checked for other details.) Despite what the dating charts and lore claim, 149s of all eras came in 14 & 18 carat gold. 14 or 18 carat nibs can be firm or flexible or soft. It's really case by case, nib by nib. However, it is safe to say that the the closer you get to the present, the firmer the nib. Finally, i think the grinds and finishing on MB nibs were better in.

The 149 Platinum box is large but simple. I think the most ornate part of it is the outer cardboard box, which is white with a silver starburst.
