Tolstoy's opus is set against a backdrop of the emancipation of the serfs, the Pan Slavism movement, political change and technological advancement. The story follows three interrelated families — the Oblonskys, Levins and Karenins. Divided into 8 parts, this eight hundred plus-page. I've also started reading Anna Karenina recently (a third of the way there), and while I agree that it's not daunting at all, there are big descriptive chapters that can feel like a lot of unneeded padding, though it does make sense from the perspective of its Realism context. It could be a lot shorter without losing its meaning, in my opinion.
