Main tips for using them: Put as many units in them as you can in the early game. For Malus you don't even need to give him any army, you just always fight coastal battles by settlements and have the Black Ark reinforce. Later on put your most expensive units in them & have them follow a lord at sea and along the coast, keeping expensive units. You don't recruit a Black Ark from the same tab as other Lords. Look to the IMMEDIATE right of that button for recruiting a Lord. What you'll see is a button that looks like a Black Ark.
