The original hotel opened on October, 15 1902, under the name The North British Railway Station Hotel. It was built and designed by W. Hamilton Beattie and A.R. Scott to partner the newly constructed Waverly Station, which had opened in 1868. The hotel closed for major refurbishment in 1988 and reopened as The Balmoral in March 1991.
