It was called Battle Isle by the Men who first saw it, so there must have been evidence of a huge battle of some kind. But not dragon skeletons, as I doubt that someone wouldn't put that in a story. So their dragons probably didn't die. But what 'great tragedy' could Valyria have faced that led them to shunning an entire continent?
